Update and a few quotes

My wife bought me a book today that I found really positive.  It’s called, “Here’s to you.”  The front cover says the following:  “There are certain people in our lives who just plain make the world a better place.  They give us hope and raise our spirits simply by being the kind of people they are.  Some people stand up and champion a cause, or provide the spark, or defy the odds, or do the right thing simply because it’s right.  They don’t really worry about fame or acclaim, they just think about being good friends, good neighbors, good people.  We don’t say it often enough, but we are grateful to have these people in our midst.  Thank you for being you.”

Sound familiar?  Read the “About Us” tab on our main page and you will find my description of Great Dads remarkably similar.  Thanks for all of the things that you great Dads do.

O.K.  Our first ever T-shirt drawing will take place tomorrow morning.  I will post the winner here, and contact them to ask what size and color shirt they want.  You have about 4 hours to sign up still, if you haven’t yet on the main page.

We are going to be adding some new gear and electronic gadgets next week, so watch for them.  We are also in the process of adding a book section to the gear categories, and moving our book recommendations there.  The current box of book recommendations will become a promo for our newsletter, which is growing.

Larry Blackmar will continue as the Dad of the Month, as he is really February’s Dad.  March 1st we will post a brand new interview.  I am sure you will like it!

I was watching a few minutes of the Shark bite special on the Discovery Channel this evening and the show ended with an interesting quote.  The show summarized the facts that sharks don’t seek out people to attack.  It’s almost always provoked by a careless swimmer.  Sharks bite less than 100 people per year, whereas humans kill over 100,000,000 sharks EACH year.  We are a much bigger threat to them than they are to us.  The last man they featured was a scientist who had been bitten by a shark, and he remarked that the thing that bothered him the most when he read about shark bites was the media’s angle.  “It shouldn’t be called a shark attack, it should be called a shark accident.”  “The shark is always the bad guy.  That has to stop.”  I thought that was fitting and similar to Dads in the media.

That is the same angle the media takes with Dads.  Dads are always the bad guys in television shows and advertisements.  That has to stop.  Statistics prove it’s not the presence of a Dad that is the problem, but precisely the opposite.  His absence is the problem.  We need our Dads to be involved with their children, and we need to encourage and give credit where it’s due.  Thanks Dads.

Here are a couple of quotes from the book “Here’s to You!”

“Nothing has to happen for me to feel good.  I feel good because I am alive!  Life is a gift and I revel in it.”  Tony Robbins

“You are not a powerless speck of dust drifting around in the wind…we are, each of us, like beautiful snowflakes — unique, and born for a specific reason and purpose.”  Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

“What could you achieve in life if you decided to become totally and blissfully impervious to hostile criticism and to rejection?”  Gary S. Goodman

“The future is in the hands of those who can give tomorrow’s generations valid reasons to live and hope.”  Pierre Teilhard De Chardin

“Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.”  Malcolm Forbes
