Swim Lessons

My wife and I started our son in swimming classes when he was around 9 months old.  He has been to swimming class once per week for almost 8 months now.  It is so great to see him become more confident with the whole routine.  Going to the pool, changing into his swimsuit, swimming under water, kicking his legs, going down the slide, showering, getting dressed, etc.  I am a Pieces myself and love the water, so it’s really neat to see him taking after me in that regard.

When we are done in the pool I take him into the men’s locker room where we are usually the only one’s there.  The women’s locker room is full of mom’s and kids, and you have to wait in line to get into the shower.  Not so in the men’s room!  We zip in, take a shower, get dressed and dry our hair and usually beat mom out to the lobby because she had to wait in line.

Seeing our son interact with the other kids in his classes is so rewarding.  Talk about being a proud parent.  He is constantly learning new words and adding to his personality repertoire.  Lately he is into a real kissing and hugging stage.  What a sweet boy.

I have only missed one swim class ever (out of over 30), and have never missed a class at the gym he goes to.  I am always struck by the fact that I am usually the only Dad there, or one of only 2.  I feel very fortunate to be self-employed and make my own schedule.  Being a part of his life, in every aspect is very important to me.  That’s why my wife and I had a child to begin with.  We wanted to be involved.

It is often a struggle to arrange my work schedule around our family time, but ultimately what’s more important?  I know I made my decision long ago, it’s family first.
