Parenting and Father involvement classes Mandatory

8 September 2008 in Uncategorized

It is now mandatory in the state of Texas for High Schoolers to take parenting classes.  Over a billion dollars of taxpayer dollars are spent each year in Texas, caring for teen mothers and their babies, so the state is doing something about it… requiring students take classes that discuss father involvement, the legal realities of child support and healthy relationships.

The classes consist of 14 1 hour sessions.  The hope of the state is that madating classes discussing realities will help the children make better choices.  The Texas State Attorney Generals official website outlining the curriculum is http://www.oag.state.tx.us/cs/ofi/papa/  Take a look.  Schools have until the end of this year to implement these classes.

I am interested to see if this makes a difference over the next few years.  Of course, Parents are the primary people responsible for teaching this type of thing to their children, but obviously they need a lot of help.
