Beach Trip, Hearing aids and other thoughts
11 June 2009 in UncategorizedWow, a lot has happened since my last post.
My wife and I took the kids to the beach in our RV for a 1 night get-away. We went to South Beach near Newport, Oregon. Really nice campground. The trip went well, the only negative was that it rained the whole time. So, that meant we didn’t spend much time on the sand, just about an hour or so. I did start to build one sandcastle that Alex destroyed nicely. We saw a lot of crabs, threw a bunch of rocks into the water, and had a nice walk. Alex ran from a wave and fell down, getting drenched in the process. That was the highlight of the trip for him, that and the Aquarium.
The Aquarium was great. We walked through it completely twice. Alex loved the giant king crabs and the sharks. He and I both petted some small sharks, crabs, rays, and starfish. Haley really went crazy over the jellyfish. She tried to grab them through the glass and just kicked and giggled like mad.
The other thing the rained prevented us from doing was have a campfire. I love sitting around campfires and talking. The flames seem to relax and mesmerize Alex too. We have a nice firepit in our back yard though, so it wasn’t too big a deal.
The big suprise was how well the kids did sleeping in the RV. With all of us together, my wife and I had doubts as to how well they would stay in bed and actually go to sleep. I set up the tent outside, just in case I had to take Alex out so we could get some sleep. We anticipated Haley not going down well, and she did cry for about an hour…but then she went to sleep and stayed asleep all night. Alex never once got out of his bed and did a great job! That was a very nice surprise for mom and dad.
Since we came back, Haley was fitted for her hearing aid, and today we picked it up. She has moderate – severe hearing loss in her left ear, and this aid is supposed to help her hear normally in that ear. Being just 9 months old, it is really important in speech development for her to hear well. So far, she seems to be taking to it well. She has taken it out several times, but overall she’s left it alone. Subjectively, she seems to be more talkative with it in than before, and she is definately as alert if not more than usual. So far so good.
